So, What Is Zumba?
Are you wondering what is Zumba?
If you have just recently heard about Zumba or perhaps you have seen the DVDs or the video advertised on TV, then you probably want to know what is this dance workout stuff all about.
Exactly What Is Zumba?
Zumba, which of course is a trademark of the company, was created by Alberto Beto Perez a native son of Columbia. Alberto, who is a celebrity fitness trainer created this exciting exercise workout by sheer accident.
As the story goes, he had left in his apartment his regular music for the aerobics class that he taught. So he ran out to his car and grabbed some Latin dance music CDs that he had been listening to.
These were mostly traditional Latin-based music.
He ended up teaching the class to this type of music and even introduced some dance steps from Salsa, Merengue etc..
Both Men and Women Loved the New Routine
From there it was just a matter of time before Alberto got the product to United States and began offering individuals the opportunity to teach and have a license to do so.
There have been many success stories as a result of this fitness work out and the eating plan that they offer.
One of the most prominent is Tanya Beardsley.
Today, she is not only an instructor but also a spokesperson for the company. The company has grown and now even offers a fitness video game workout which can be performed in the comfort and convenience of your home.
How to Become A Member of the Zumba Instructor Network
In a moment, you’ll read about my exciting transformation and how I became an instructor.
Every day more more individuals approach me after class asking me how they to can get involved in teaching this exciting dance workout. I always recommend that they first build up their conditioning by attending classes 3 to 4 times a week. Once they are comfortable with the different dance moves and have enough cardiovascular fitness then they should take the next step.

What Is Zumba To Me!
My name is Melissa, and approximately 3 years ago, I was working in the advertising business for a major Fortune 500 Company in New York City. However, my passion was dancing. I always wondered if it was possible to my my passion for dancing with an exercise workout that wasn’t boring.

You see, I have always tried to do something to stay in shape.
However, working out at the gym or a group exercise class can be boring. And let’s face it exercising is not exactly the most thrilling and fun thing you can do.
In fact, most group exercise classes become repetitious and boring very quickly. Don’t you agree?
So, let’s get back to our story. One day as I was leaving Bally’s gym, I noticed a new type of group fitness class. This class was very much like the ballroom dancing that I had done for so many years. However, it looked like ballroom dancing mashed together with an aerobic workout. What a great idea, it was called Zumba.
And just like you I was wondering what is Zumba.
I decided to try out this dance workout class. And well that one dance class completely changed my life – but I didn’t know what else was to come.
Let’s fast-forward to today. I no longer work in the advertising business. I am a full-time Zumba instructor. I am also a certified personal trainer and have many different exercise and fitness certifications. Yes, a complete career change.
All because of one dance fitness session!

In addition to changing my career, I also lost more than 30 pounds and a boatload of inches off my body.
What Does Zumba Mean?
To me it means having a lot of fun while trying to get fit. It’s a new kind of dance-fitness program.
It’s a combination of dance and fitness moves based on Latin music such as, Merengue, Rumba, and Salsa. Today, they include music from hip-hop, Lady Gaga, Pitbull and other exciting artists.
It’s all just one big Zumba fitness-party.
It doesn’t even feel like you’re working out because you’re having so much fun. You don’t even need to know how to dance because the choreography is very simple and anyone can pick it up easily. So, if you have two left feet – don’t even worry about it and no special Zumba Clothes are necessary.
A typical class is about one hour long and utilizes a training protocol called "High Interval Training." That’s the secret behind it and why so many people including instructors, are achieving their fitness goals. And believe me this is happening all around the world.
That’s the "Zumba formula" which includes the exciting aerobics music, performing aerobic exercise dance moves and of course following a healthy lifestyle.
Here’s a list of some of the different types of Latin-inspired dance-fitness classes:
- Basic Zumba – Traditional or basic program. Alternates between fast music and slower tempos for greater calorie and fat burning.
- Zumba Gold – Designed active older adults.
- Zumba Toning – Combines strength training with basic dance moves
- Aqua Zumba – It’s a dance party in the water.
- Zumbatomic – Utilizes music and dance moves that appeal to younger children.
However, I must warn you. It’s very addictive and can completely change your life as it did with me.
